Overview

The Field Survey Technician performs a broad range of land surveying field activities supporting boundary, topographic, construction staking, ALTA, control, and related survey projects. This role consolidates responsibilities historically performed by Survey Crew Members, Crew Chiefs, and Field Technicians, with duties and expectations scaling by experience, demonstrated competency, and leadership capability. Work is performed under the technical direction of a Professional Land Surveyor (PLS/RPLS) and coordinated through the Survey Resource Manager or Survey Team Leader. Field Survey Technicians may work independently or as part of a crew. This position does not include project management, staff scheduling, or firm wide standards ownership. This is a non-exempt position, paid on an hourly basis.

Responsibilities

Field Survey Operations

    Perform land surveying field work including boundary retracement, topographic surveys, construction staking, control surveys, and ALTA surveys
  • Operate survey equipment including GNSS, robotic total stations, data collectors, and levels
  • Collect accurate locations, elevations, dimensions, and feature data
  • Apply proper field procedures based on site conditions, project requirements, and safety considerations
  • Maintain complete, accurate, and legible field notes, sketches, and electronic data records
  • Ensure field activities comply with company standards, state regulations, and surveying industry practices

Data Handling & Coordination

  • Download, manage, and organize data collector files
  • Coordinate with office staff to ensure accurate transfer and processing of survey data
  • Assist with or perform data import into AutoCAD Civil 3D and/or MicroStation OpenRoads (experience dependent)
  • Accurately communicate progress, field conditions, and issues to supervisors

Equipment, Vehicles & Facilities

  • Operate assigned survey equipment with an understanding of capabilities and limitations
  • Maintain assigned survey equipment, vehicles, and supplies in clean, organized, and serviceable condition
  • Assist with routine equipment calibration, maintenance, and survey shop organization

Professional Conduct & Safety

  • Comply with all company safety policies, practices, and procedures
  • Work collaboratively with field and office staff to meet project scopes, schedules, and quality expectations
  • Travel and work overtime as project needs required
  • Perform other duties as assigned


Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Valid state-issued driver’s license with a clean driving record meeting company insurance requirements
  • Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, including extreme temperatures
  • Work in urban and rural environments, including roadways and uneven terrain
  • Ability to walk, stand, bend, kneel, stoop, climb, and reach for extended periods
  • Ability to lift, carry, and operate survey equipment and supplies weighing up to 50+ pounds
  • Ability to clear brush and vegetation as needed to complete survey tasks
  • Potential exposure to insects, wildlife, traffic, and environmental hazards
  • Willingness to work overtime as needed
  • Willingness to travel and stay overnight for project locations more than two hours from the home office
