Responsible To: Director of Nature Recovery in the interim
Location: Home based, with frequent travel required around Wales, and occasionally the wider UK
Salary: £33,653 – £38,166 plus 8% employer pension contribution
Hours: 37 Hours Per Week (1 FTE)
Contract: Established post

Job Purpose

  • To co-deliver Butterfly Conservation’s strategic objectives across Wales, driving effective action to meet our strategic conservation goals and maintain and enhance populations of butterflies and moths.
  • To initiate, engage and form effective partnerships with government, statutory agencies, voluntary and private sector organisations, landowners, and the Society’s branches and volunteers.
  • To contribute to and oversee the management of our nature reserves in Wales.

Main Responsibilities

  • Drive delivery of our strategic goals within Wales in collaboration with BC colleagues, Branches, volunteers, land managers, partner organisations and statutory bodies.
  • Deliver species recovery programmes for threatened species within Wales.
  • Develop, deliver and manage landscape-scale projects to conserve our most threatened butterflies and moths across Wales.
  • Line manage project staff as required.
  • Oversee the management of our Wales nature reserves alongside colleagues, supported by the Land Use team, and to support Branch volunteers and partners in site management.
  • Support BC’s Species Research programme through close collaboration with the Evidence team and partner institutions.
  • Support BC’s Species Monitoring programme to assess habitat and species responses to management intervention and measure the impact of our work.
  • Promote sustainable land management for Lepidoptera through direct advice to landowners and site managers and through the production of evidence-based best practice guidance.
  • Implement BC’s national strategies and policies across Wales and raise awareness of activities in location through events and publicity.
  • Work closely with, and help build capacity amongst, BC’s Branches and volunteers in Wales, so that they can play a greater part in the conservation of butterflies and moths.
  • Provide relevant training (e.g., identification, survey, monitoring and land management) to volunteers, landowners, site managers, conservation partners, and farming/forestry advisers.
  • Promote the impact of BC’s work across Wales to a wide audience, including through presentations to relevant meetings and working with the media.

General
